Now is the time to Repower, Refuel, and Rebuild America

We need to build a clean energy economy that will break our dependence on oil, put Americans back to work, and cut global warming pollution.

Investing in clean energy will create millions of good-paying jobs in the hardest-hit construction and manufacturing sectors and create pathways out of poverty for the most affected communities.

We applaud President Obama's budget for making clean energy one of his top priorities, and we also congratulate House Chairmen Henry Waxman and Ed Markey for moving quickly to spur legislative action. Now, we urge the new administration and Congress to work together to produce a comprehensive plan that will:

  • Cut our oil dependence in half;
  • Move to 100% electricity from clean sources such as wind and solar;
  • Create 5 million new clean energy jobs; and
  • Reduce global warming pollution by at least 80%.

What's the problem?

  • America continues to be addicted to oil, which threatens our economy and national security.
  • America's electricity depends primarily on fossil fuels-like coal in power plants and oil in cars-which are expensive, dirty and limited resources.
  • Unemployment surpassed 8% in early 2009-the highest level in 14 years-with traditional sectors like manufacturing and industry among the hardest hit.
  • If global warming continues at this rate, vulnerable communities will be displaced, food sources will be disrupted, endangered animals will disappear, and weather-related natural disasters will increase in frequency and intensity.

Americans support investment in clean energy and see this as win-win proposition for energy and the environment.

  • According to Zogby International's post-election poll, more than three-quarters of Americans (78%) see clean energy as a key to the country's economic health.
  • 57% of voters said it was important to back a candidate who supports reducing global warming pollution-a significant increase from 2006 when it was 49%.

We need to start today by:

  • Improving vehicle efficiency by investing in cars that use electricity instead of oil; and creating a 21st century transportation system.
  • Producing energy from clean sources, like wind and solar; and increasing energy efficiency in homes and buildings.
  • Investing in new clean energy industries; developing new energy-saving technologies; and training workers for good-paying "green collar" jobs.
  • Setting firm limits on global warming pollution and rewarding smart companies for real reductions.

What can you do to build support for this effort?

Engage with influential leaders in your community to encourage Congress to invest in clean energy to reduce our dependence on oil, create new jobs, and cut global warming pollution.

Join with local organizers and other allies-like business leaders, labor groups-to organize events and actions that will raise awareness and build on the momentum to address these critical issues.

Sign our petition, found on www.getworking.org, calling on the Congress to follow through on the President's call to enact comprehensive clean energy legislation.

While all the organizations participating in the Save Our Environment Action Center share the common goal of
protecting the environment, individual groups can, and sometimes do, differ in their approaches to specific issues.
