New Report: Thousands of Jobs Created From Clean Energy
As America confronts the current energy crisis, a new report released today shows that the U.S. can create two million new jobs nationwide by investing in clean energy technologies that will strengthen the economy and fight global warming. The report finds that investing in clean energy would create four times as many jobs as spending the same amount of money within the oil industry.
The report was written by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, under commission by the Center for American Progress (CAP) and released by a coalition of labor and environmental groups. The authors of the report are Robert Pollin, Heidi Garrett-Peltier, James Heintz, and Helen Scharber of PERI.

Clean energy sources not only provide real solutions to today's energy mess, they also are essential to solving global warming and will create millions of jobs. Reducing global warming emissions from today's energy industry will require a substantial shift in investments from the polluting, insecure energy sources of the past to the clean, sustainable energy sources of the 21st Century. That investment not only holds the potential for reduced energy costs and will reduce global warming emissions, but it will spur huge growth in green jobs—making the new cars we need, insulating homes, building a smart power grid and new power sources like wind turbines, and producing clean fuels from America's heartland.
Fortunately, many of the technologies we need to transition into our clean energy future already exist, and deploying them can build a stronger economy. In fact, achieving a clean energy economy through green solutions and industries such as wind power, solar power, building retrofitting, mass transit, fuel-efficient automobiles, and cellulosic biomass fuels will create high demand for jobs, in addition to those that already exist.
In the next 20 years, the United States is expected to invest more than $3 trillion into energy infrastructure—power plants, refineries, transmission lines and transport infrastructure. To solve our triple challenges of bad energy choices, economic troubles and global warming, Congress must enact policies that drive these investments into the production and deployment of clean energy technologies, instead of dirty energy technologies.
We stand at a crossroads: we can keep doing what is not working—continuing down the same path with an ever-increasing dependence on outdated forms of energy—or we can usher in a new era with clean, affordable, practical energy solutions that reduce energy use and costs, cut global warming pollution, and put America to work!
Please urge your Congressmen to implement common sense policies that will usher in a new energy economy!
