Subject: Please support the following early education and care amendments
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
On Wednesday, the Senate Ways and Means Committee's budget reduced spending for early education and care and slashed funding for the Massachusetts Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program by 67%. I respectfully request that you support the following amendments to restore services for young children and families:
1. Universal Pre-Kindergarten (line item 3000-5075): Restore funding to the House's recommendation of $9.81 million (Sponsor: Senator Robert O'Leary)
2. Family Supports (line item 3000-7050): Restore funding to the House's recommendation of $7.48 million (Sponsor: Senator Robert O'Leary)
3. Mental Health Services (line item 3000-6075): restore funding to the House's recommendation of $1 million (Sponsor: Senator Jennifer Flanagan)
I also ask that you please contact Senate President Therese Murray and Senate Ways and Means Chair Steven Panagiotakos and request their support in advancing these amendments to the senate floor for favorable action.
Research demonstrates that high-quality early education improves school readiness and increases academic achievement, providing a substantial return on taxpayers' investment. By supporting these critically important early education amendments, you will help provide young children with the start they need to succeed in school and in life.
Thank you for your leadership and support.
Sincerely,
