Here in Rhode Island, the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers has the authority to permit companies like Verizon to compete against the cable companies.
In June, Verizon was granted permission to offer FiOS TV to consumers in Service Area 6, which includes Coventry, Exeter, East Greenwich, North Kingstown, Warwick, West Greenwich and West Warwick.
Verizon recently filed an application with the DPUC to offer FiOS TV to an estimated 158,000 households in Service Areas 2, 3, and 8, which includes Charlestown, Cranston, Foster, Hopkinton, Johnston, Narragansett, North Providence, Providence, Richmond, Scituate, South Kingstown and Westerly.
Once a video franchise is granted, you will finally have the opportunity to choose between the latest in video entertainment with FiOS TV, or the same old thing. We say: Let consumers decide!
You can help. By adding your voice in support of video choice and competition, you're letting your local officials know how important this issue is. Whether by sending a fax or e-mail to your local leaders, or by attending a public hearing in support of our franchise application, your voice counts!
