Send a letter to key policymakers on RAND's California Preschool Study

With this new research from RAND confirming that the achievement gap evident during the K-12 years exists when kids first enter kindergarten, we need to make sure that California’s policymakers know how important effective pre-k is to our state.

Send Gov. Schwarzenegger, key legislative leaders and your legislators a letter today to encourage them to include pre-k investment in the emerging dialogue and planning on education reform.

Please personalize this letter by sharing your personal stories about the benefits of pre-k and your perspective on why effective pre-k is important for your community.

Subject: Pre-k is the first step in education reform

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As we look forward to 2008, a pre-k buzz is spreading in Sacramento and across the state and policymakers, educators, business leaders and law enforcement are including pre-k in important conversations about education reform.

New California research from the RAND Corporation confirms that we need to invest in effective pre-k if we want to narrow the achievement gap and improve the K-12 school system. The studies reveal that the achievement gap evident in later years exists when kids first enter kindergarten. Too often, the children who start out behind in kindergarten stay behind throughout their academic careers. The research confirms what advocates like me already know, effective pre-k can help kids enter school prepared to learn.

Unfortunately, the reality in California is that too few children have access to effective programs. That's why we need to place pre-k at the forefront of the public education discussion. Education reform begins with pre-k.

I hope that you will work with other key policymakers to make this critical investment in our children and our state.

Sincerely,
