Help Protect Pre-K Funding

The decision about funding for pre-k is still under consideration and Governor Beshear will make the final decision about program cuts very soon.

The latest projections for the FY2010 budget are worse than we thought, calling for a 3% to 4% cut in the state’s preschool program. That would mean funding for 700-800 at-risk children.

Tell Governor Beshear that pre-k should be exempt from budget cuts because a strong pre-kindergarten experience is vital to improving all of our children’s chances for greater success in school and as adults.

Subject: Protect Pre-K Funding

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Please protect early childhood education from cuts in the FY2010 budget. Governors in other states including Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota have been able to maintain their pre-k funding and Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Virginia have increased funding for pre-k - in these challenging economic times!!

A 3% or 4% cut for Kentucky's preschool program would mean that nearly 700-800 at-risk children would be unable to attend preschool next year. I strongly encourage you to find another way to reduce state spending and protect pre-k for hundreds of Kentucky's children.

Strong preschool programs benefit both individuals and communities. I know you understand and appreciate those benefits as well.

These are tough times with many challenges, but this is Kentucky's chance to show that maintaining our highly regarded preschool program is a top priority for our state, even in harsh economic times.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
