Ask Governor Beshear to Protect Pre-K from proposed budget cuts

Governor Steve Beshear has demonstrated support for Kentucky's Preschool Program by recently appointing a Task Force on Early Childhood Development and Education. But his proposed budget in the current special session does not reflect that commitment. The FY2010 budget proposal would include a 2.6% cut in the state's Preschool Program.

Subject: Protect Pre-K from proposed budget cuts

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Thank you for your past support of Early Childhood Education and Kentucky's Preschool Program. I am writing today to ask that you further demonstrate your support by protecting pre-k from cuts in the FY2010 budget proposed for the special session. By giving Kentucky's Preschool Program full support, you will help ensure a successful future for many Kentucky children.

I support Kentucky's Preschool Program because of the benefits it provides for both individuals and communities. Higher graduation rates and lifetime earnings along with cost savings resulting from lower grade retention and need for special education, lower arrest rates and need for welfare are just a few examples of the impact that high-quality pre-k programs have on children's lives and the communities in which they live.

This is Kentucky's chance to show that maintaining our highly regarded Preschool Program is a top priority even in harsh economic times. I respectfully request that you revise your FY2010 budget proposal to maintain funding for Kentucky's Preschool Program which is so vital to our state's future success. Thank you.

Sincerely,
