After Climate Week Winds Down, It's Time for PSC to Ramp Up

Last week in New York City was Climate Week – an opportunity to raise awareness about the local and global threats of a changing climate. All over the city, New Yorkers took action against climate change. But even as we acted, the Public Service Commission did not. The PSC still isn't investing tax dollars it collected to reduce NYC's electricity consumption and carbon emissions.

City Council Passes Bill to Reduce School Bus Emissions

Before Climate Week even began the City Council was doing their part. In mid-September, they passed legislation to retire 600 old school buses and upgrade 6,000 more with pollution-control equipment. The result, as proposed in PlaNYC, will be a more efficient, cleaner school bus fleet that greatly reduces emissions and fumes. Read more:

What would all those parking spaces look like if they weren't set aside for cars? A bunch of New Yorkers spent the day showing us alternative ways to use the city's space. Read more:

New York City conducts an annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory. 2008 data was just released, showing a decrease of 3.5 percent below 2007 levels despite growth in population and building stock. The City is on track to achieve PlaNYC's overarching goal of a 30 percent reduction in citywide greenhouse gas emissions below 2005 levels by 2030.
