We're in the middle of a crisis, and homeowners are really feeling the pinch. It's getting tougher and tougher for many families to make their monthly mortgage payments as their adjustable interest rates skyrocket and housing prices continue to fall.

It's time for the federal government to act -- and act swiftly.  We can't just stand by and watch as tens of thousands more hard-working Americans lose their homes.

With 8,000 American families losing their homes every day, I urge you to act swiftly to pass strong foreclosure relief legislation and send it to President Bush for his signature.

The goal of any relief bill must be to prevent foreclosures and keep families in their homes.

That's why I support Senator Dick Durbin's plan to allow bankruptcy judges to restructure home mortgages for families facing foreclosure -- something that could directly help more than half a million American homeowners. It's good for American families, because it keeps them in their homes, and it's good for banks, because they don't have to foreclose on homes and sell them at huge losses. I hope the final foreclosure bill passed by Congress includes Senator Durbin's provision.

If the federal government can bail out the investment banks on Wall Street, surely it can provide some relief to the homeowners on Main Street too. Please act swiftly to pass a strong foreclosure relief bill and prevent tens of thousands more Americans from losing their homes.
