In May 2004, Verizon began the first-ever large-scale deployment of fiber-optic technology to individual homes and businesses, replacing the copper wires that connect customers to the Verizon network today. Now it's coming to the District!
Called fiber to the premises, or FTTP, the new technology delivers unprecedented speed and a totally new broadband experience. This FiOS network has far more capacity than cable’s and is less vulnerable to weather outages and electrical interference. And it provides the bandwidth and speed to make available an array of new services called FiOS: super-fast, high-speed Internet access, crystal-clear voice service and a new alternative to cable TV - Verizon FiOS TV. |
