Thank you for sending your letter! If you can take one more step -

Call your State Senator, Assembly member and Senate Pro Tem Perata and ask them to oppose SB 1056.
You can look up their contact information HERE (enter your zip code and click "find", once the page comes up click on the "state" tab at the top of the page to access phone numbers for your elected officials in the California House and Senate)

Prepare before you call. It is fine to leave a message after business hours; just remember to speak slowly and start the message by telling them that you are a constituent. Effective grassroots lobbying calls should:

  • Include mention of your name and city/area of residence so they know you are a constituent.
  • Clearly state what you want: OPPOSE SB 1056

Here are some suggestions for your calls:

  • For your state legislators (look up info HERE): Hi, my name is ___________, and I am a constituent.  I live in __________.  I am very concerned with SB 1056, introduced by Senator Florez.  Whether temporary or permanent, this bill would take away the rights of local governments to pass policies regulating seeds, including restrictions on genetically engineered seeds. In the absence of state regulations, citizens and local governments should be allowed to work together to pass local policies.  Therefore I am strongly opposed to this bill.  Thank you.
  • For Senator Perata ((916) 651-4009): Hi, my name is _________.  I am calling to register my strong opposition to SB 1056.  Whether temporary or permanent, SB 1056 is a blatant attack on grassroots democracy at the local level.  In the absence of state regulations, local governments should have the right to regulate seeds and root stock as they see fit, including GE seeds. I urge Senate President pro Tem Perata to lead the way in stopping this legislation. Thank you.
