The landmark Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 and its 2000 reauthorization bill have provided billions of dollars for battered women’s shelters, treatment of sexual assault victims, grants to encourage arrest of abusers, services for women with disabilities, rape prevention education, transitional housing for survivors and research on violence against women. The legislation is due to expire on September 30th, and must be reauthorized.
