The short explanation of this alert was:

Now is the time to tell Congress to remove the loophole that allows the CIA to engage in torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

During the confirmation process for Attorney General Michael Mukasey, news coverage focused on one question: Is waterboarding torture?  We know if it. Unfortunately, the attention to one form of torture obscured reports that the CIA continues to use a variety of brutal physical and psychological interrogation techniques, tactics that rise to the level of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

Torture and cruel treatment are not effective interrogation tools and will not make our nation safer.  This is confirmed by experienced FBI and military interrogators, even CIA research. (For more on this, see the report Educing Information by the National Defense Intelligence College).

Legislation introduced in the Senate (S. 1943) would require the CIA to follow minimum standards of humane treatment as set forth in the Army Field Manual on Interrogation. This manual was revised in September 2006 and clearly prohibits torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

Urge your Senators to support minimum standards of humane treatment by the CIA. Ask them to support S. 1943 to ensure that all U.S. personnel are upholding U.S. and international law.  Tell them torture violates deeply held American values, including our belief in the rule of law, fairness and respect for human dignity.
