Protect NYC's water supply!

Right now, the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is considering a plan that would allow drilling for natural gas deposits – get this – in the watershed that supplies 90% of NYC's water supply.

We need your help to make sure no drilling is allowed to jeopardize our greatest natural resource, the water supply of nine million New Yorkers. Urge the NY State DEC and state officials to make sure no drilling is allowed to put at risk the safety of our water supply!

As a resident of New York City, I am disturbed to hear that the DEC is currently considering allowing drilling for natural gas in the watershed that supplies high quality drinking water to nearly half the population of the State of New York - over nine million people in New York City and Orange, Putnam, Ulster and Westchester counties. This precious resource is vital to New York's future and must be protected for future generations.

Drilling for natural gas in this area could have many detrimental impacts on our water including risks to water quality, available water supply and water transportation infrastructure. The drilling process (known as hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking) could result in contaminating our drinking water supply with dangerous chemicals and potentially force drastic increases in water rates to pay for multi-billion dollar filtration plants.

Please make sure no natural gas drilling is allowed to put at risk the safety of our water supply. As a New York resident who turns on the faucet every day - just like nine million others who depend on the same watershed - I want you to know that protecting New York's water supply could not be more important to me or to New York's future.
