The short explanation of this alert was:

Tell the Next President How Broadband Changed Your Life or How Broadband Can Change the Lives of Others... and win $1000 and a trip to Washington, D.C.!

Just as the U.S. built interstate highways to connect people from one part of the country to another, we believe that broadband is the necessary connection to usher in the next era of prosperity and innovation. Some telecom companies are now spending more money to build out high speed networks than the U.S. government spent to put a man on the moon. But will those networks connect people in rural America, people with disabilities, older adults and young children? Will the next generation of communications technology be user friendly and affordable for everyone? The Alliance for Public Technology has designed this contest to demonstrate how high speed Internet access is transforming the lives of real people in real ways—every day with:

  • Long distance medical imaging
  • Remote chronic disease monitoring for heart disease, diabetes and others
  • Webcam visits with friends and relatives
  • Global student collaboration with experts and other classrooms
  • Remote real time sign language communication and other tools for independent living
  • Worker training and re-training
  • Participation in the democratic process
  • Economic revitalization for distressed communities

The best submissions will be awarded $1,000 for first place, $500 for second and $250 for third judged by APT Board Members and staff. By entering, you give permission to post your entry on our website and have it publicized. The first place winner will also receive a trip to Washington and a ticket to an Inaugural Ball.

The deadline for entries is 10/1/08. Only one entry per person please. You must be at least 18 years of age to enter.
