Tell Albany their work is not done

This week, our leaders in Albany prevented what would have been the worst transit doomsday in the history of New York. That's important.

But even though the harshest fare increases and service cuts were averted, questions remain about a source of long-term capital funding to maintain and improve our transit system over the long haul.

Tell Albany thanks, but their work isn't done yet.

I've spent the last 5 months urgently hoping Albany would prevent a transit doomsday, and I am pleased that state legislators and the governor averted the outrageous fare hikes and service cuts that have been threatened for so long. That's good, but I need you to do more.

We've taken the first steps, but there's a long way to go to ensure full, fair funding for the investments we need to make in our transit system - transit investments that are essential to our economy, our environment, and our quality of life.

I know this was a difficult process, and I'm grateful that our leaders listened to New Yorkers and continued to wrangle until a reasonable compromise was struck.

But as you know, there's more work to be done before we can claim to have a plan that fully and fairly funds the MTA for the long haul, not only limiting the financial burden on riders, but securing a stable source of funding for a capital plan to ensure our transit system is maintained and improved for many years to come.

The vote this week may have stopped the doomsday clock, but the pressure hasn't lifted. After the challenges we've faced this year, it might be tempting to brush the problems of the MTA aside, but mass transit remains the lifeblood of New York, and there's no time to waste in ensuring New York has the world class transit system it deserves and the money to maintain it.

I am glad transit doomsday has been averted for now, but please don't let the momentum fade. New York's future depends on a full, fair, long-term funding plan for transit.
