What can 8 people do to save millions from preventable disease, extreme poverty, and political instability? They can move mountains if they are leaders of the G8 nations AND if they have the moral will and determination of caring citizens behind them.
That's why we need your voice. Please read on.
The G8 summit has come and gone. There were successes and failures, but for now, let's focus on a potential success - aid to Africa.
The president heard the facts: This very day - and every day - more than 3,000 children in Africa will die from Malaria, a preventable disease! More than four MILLION children under the age of five die in Africa every year. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has shaved the life expectancy from 62 to 27 in some nations.
President Bush heard the facts and at the urging of Prime Minister Blair, pitched in to help double the G8's commitment from $25 billion to $50 billion. Moreover, in fulfilling our larger commitment to the Millennium Development Goals, we're not even close. Right now we are paying less than 25% of our share.
The President has made a good beginning toward an American response we could be proud of. Now is the time for us to stand behind President Bush to see that his promise is fulfilled!
That's where your voice comes in.
Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) has introduced a bill to the Senate that calls for our nation to give a thorough reporting on our progress toward fulfilling our commitments to these and other Millennium Development Goals. In short, it will measure how we walk the talk.
The Christian scriptures warn: "Faith without works is dead." (James 2:20) friend, in the case of the crisis in Africa, this scripture is quite literally true! We are asking that you send a letter to your Senators urging them to support this effort. By taking action now, we can seize the momentum from the G8 summit and help insure that the United States leads the way in fulfilling its promises to our brothers and sisters who need us.
