Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is the consummate insider in Washington. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, he’s raised $220 million from wealthy donors for his own campaigns, his political action committee, the Republican Party, and GOP candidates. “When he asked for money, his eyes would shine like diamonds,” said former GOP Senator Alan Simpson. “He obviously loved it.”
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, for his own campaigns, McConnell’s money comes from influential industries:
- Insurance - $523,724
- Oil & Gas - $441,911
- Commercial Banks - $431,705
- Tobacco - $250,725
- Beer, Wine & Liquor - $250,354
- Lobbyists - $240,556
- Electric Utilities - $230,750
And he’s rewarded them with votes and behind-the-scenes deals over his three terms in the Senate. He needs to be put on notice that Americans wants change.
