Protect Hurdygurdy Creek

As California's only major undammed river system, the Smith River provides an unparalleled opportunity to protect critical habitat for many of California's wild and native fish. California Trout joined with many state, national, and regional conservation and fishery organizations to form the Smith River Alliance in 1980 to protect this watershed system and the lands that surround it. The Smith River Alliance successfully worked with Congress to establish the Smith River National Recreation Area in 1990.

Several key privately-held parcels of land have recently been put up for sale along Hurdygurdy Creek and could be purchased by developers. The US Forest Service will acquire this land to protect it from development if the Senate approves sufficient funds to do so. Protection of these 5,400 acres would be an important step toward completing the vision for the Smith River National Recreation Area.

I am writing to urge you to dedicate $4.5 million in Federal Land and Water Conservation Funds to acquire land surrounding Hurdygurdy Creek, a tributary of the Smith River.  The proposed acquisition is an inholding within the Smith River National Recreation Area.  By enabling the purchase of this land, you will ensure that Hurdygurdy Creek will be protected from future development forever.

Wild salmon populations are declining precipitously throughout California. The Smith River is our premier stronghold for salmon, steelhead and native trout.  Hurdygurdy Creek is one of the most productive salmon streams in the NRA and provides key habitat for wild salmon, steelhead, and coastal cutthroat trout.

Protecting Hurdygurdy Creek is a critically important investment in the recovery of our native salmon species -- not only for the Smith River but for the Klamath River and our other coastal rivers as well.

Your previous support in preserving Goose Creek, another Smith River tributary, was an important step toward protecting the long-term health of this thriving undammed watershed system.  As an angler, I urge you to continue the effort to preserve the Smith River, California's finest wild river system.
