Congress now has an opportunity to improve the quality of medical care, enhance convenience for patients, and literally save lives - all while helping to bring skyrocketing healthcare costs under control. This is why I am writing to urge you to pass health information technology (Health IT) legislation this now! The longer Congress stalls the more lives are at risk.

By focusing on areas of bipartisan consensus, Congress can guide and accelerate the development of a nationwide interoperable health information system. Health IT will improve quality of care, save lives by significantly reducing the 98,000 deaths caused each year by medical errors, eliminate most duplicate and unnecessary testing, dramatically lower health care costs, and improve health care access for all Americans. Without responsible federal guidance, the public interest in a nationwide interoperable system that serves all patients and meets our public health needs will be endangered.

We need congressional action on this bipartisan issue now! This will allow our health care system to finally deliver benefits that are long overdue.
