The oil slick from BP's damaged well now covers three times the size of New Hampshire, with up to 1 million gallons of crude per day threatening the lives of sperm whales, brown pelicans, shrimp, fish, and the future of the fragile coast itself.
We cannot allow oil drilling in new places off of our precious, fragile coasts.
Dear President Obama, In light of the unfolding disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, I am writing to urge you to reverse course on your recent plans to open our coasts to more oil drilling. There are now millions and millions of gallons of oil floating off Gulf coast from Louisiana to Florida, threatening untold destruction to wildlife and the environment. If we ever needed a reminder that "drill, baby, drill" is the wrong way to go, we now have it. I do not want to see more birds, beaches and boats covered in oil slicks. I know you have postponed decisions on expanding offshore drilling for six months. But nothing will change in that time to make drilling safe for our shores. I urge you to act now to permanently protect America's coasts from new offshore oil drilling in places that are not currently leased. And prioritize clean energy policies and global warming legislation so we can reduce our use of oil in the first place. Sincerely,
