The short explanation of this alert was:
The D.R.Congo Bill has passed the Senate – but now we need the House of Representatives to do the same. Time is running out. Tell your Representatives to co-sponsor and support the Senate version of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act of 2005 as soon as possible.

This legislation must come up for a vote in November or we will lose this opportunity and the legislation will be lost - contact your Representative now.

According to the International Rescue Committee’s mortality survey more than 1,000 people are dying each day. The majority of deaths are from easily preventable and treatable illnesses; but the ongoing conflict keeps the people of Congo from getting the food, clean water, and medical treatment they need. If the violence subsided, this exceptional death rate could be controlled.

The Senate version of the D.R.Congo bill would establish core principles of US policy to help save lives and rebuild this war-torn country including:

- authorizing a 25 percent increase in US assistance

- calling for a Special Envoy to this region of Africa

- recommending U.N. Security Council strengthen its peacekeeping forces

- reinvigorating economic, social, and political infrastructure

- sustaining the US's commitment for at least 3 years in rebuilding the Congo

US support for Congo is critically important right now and could make the difference between war or peace. Send the letter below to your Representative now:
