DefCon: Campaign to Defend The Constitution. Because The Religious Right Is Wrong

I am deeply concerned about the vast and growing influence of the religious right and the threat it poses to our democracy, our children's education, and our nation's future.

Though I respect people of faith and the right of all Americans to their personal religious and spiritual beliefs, I am shocked and outraged by the growing power of the religious right through people and organizations like James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, the American Family Association, and Focus on the Family. The religious right is dangerous, and it must be stopped.

The framers of our Constitution knew what they were doing in keeping the powers of church and state separate.  That separation strengthened our democracy and made it a model for countries across the world.

Full Petition Text:

I support DefCon: Campaign to Defend the Constitution because the religious right is wrong:

- Wrong to pursue an agenda that is un-American and threatens the principles that made this country great.
- Wrong to impose religion on our courts or legal system. Independent courts, free from political and religious influence, are fundamental to democracy.
- Wrong to interfere in personal decisions on matters from medical treatment and pregnancy to lifestyle choices.
- Wrong to teach religious rhetoric in place of scientific fact in public schools.
- Wrong to let religion stand in the way of scientific and technological progress that is essential to the country's economic growth and to the health and education of my family and fellow citizens.

I support what is truly right in America -- a society based on reason, personal freedom, the rule of law and the freedom to worship according to one's faith and beliefs.
