Protect Colorado's Pristine Forests!

The State of Colorado recently proposed a new rule that would dramatically weaken the Roadless Area Conservation Rule that currently protects Colorado's 4.4 million acres of pristine wild forests.

We must speak up to prevent roads, logging, pipelines, power lines, dams, oil and gas leases, and coal development in Colorado's wild forests.

I urge you to abandon your proposal that seeks to weaken protections for roadless forests in Colorado. Coloradoans overwhelmingly supported the 2001 National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Rule and Colorado's roadless forests should remain governed by its protections.

I find the numerous new loopholes in roadless protections contained in the Colorado rule particularly objectionable. These include broad new exemptions for road building and logging far from communities as well as unfettered development access for new power lines, dams and other water infrastructure. I am also opposed to the elimination of roadless protections in order to allow 100 oil and gas leases and new coal mining to go forward in roadless areas.

Rather than seeking to protect Colorado's wild forests, the rule seems intent on catering to the same industry interests that have sought to dominate the use of our public lands for the past eight years. The proposed Roadless Rule in Colorado would leave our state's wild forests more vulnerable than other states. I urge you to abandon this flawed proposal and allow Colorado's wild forests to continue to be protected by the 2001 Roadless Rule.
