Stop U.S. Agribusiness Giant Cargill From Destroying More Rainforests
Tropical rainforests are home to half the plant and animal species on earth, and only 20 percent of these forests remain on our entire planet. Unfortunately, increasing demand for palm oil for consumer products is pushing palm oil cultivation into the rainforests - destroying habitats for unique species, displacing communities, and making Indonesia the third largest greenhouse gas emitter on Earth as carbon from felled forests is released into the atmosphere. In a time when global climate change is the most pressing environmental issue humanity has yet faced, and the window of opportunity for action is rapidly closing, it's time to take action to let some of the biggest drivers of this environmental crime know that they need to stop!
Cargill is the largest privately-held company in the United States and the largest importer of palm oil. Palm oil is an ingredient used in 50 percent of all consumer goods from lipstick to breakfast cereals and is grown in tropical countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Cargill says that it's committed to "sustainable palm oil" but it continues to source palm oil from suppliers who are clearing and burning rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations. Unfortunately, their current policies are threatening the rights of local communities, destroying some of the world's last rainforests and contributing to climate change.

"Hello, my name is xxx and I live in xxx. I'm calling today to express my concern about Cargill's role in rainforest destruction. Cargill is clearing and burning threatened tropical rainforests for palm oil plantations in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.
"I'm aware that you've claimed to be committed to 'sustainable palm oil' but you are continuing to source your palm oil from suppliers who are clearing and burning rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations. I'm concerned about climate change and the extinction of critically threatened species like orangutans that have lost almost all of their habitat from palm oil expansion.
"Please stop rainforest destruction, displacing communities for palm oil plantations and adopt and implement a comprehensive global forest policy. Thank you!"
