Lake Michigan is in serious trouble, and we need your help to save it. That's why we've launched an online petition campaign to protect our lake. If you haven't yet heard our radio ad, click here to listen to it.
British Petroleum has announced plans to dump up to 1,584 pounds of ammonia and 4,925 pounds of industrial solids into Lake Michigan every single day from a BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana -- a massive setback to decades of work to clean up the lake.
I oppose British Petroleum's plans to dramatically increase the pollution it releases into Lake Michigan from its refinery in Whiting, Indiana -- plans which call for 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more solid waste to be dumped into Lake Michigan.
The Great Lakes account for 95 percent of the surface freshwater in the U.S. and provide drinking water for more than 30 million Americans, including the entire Chicago-metropolitan region.
It is simply unacceptable that a company that has spent millions of dollars to portray itself as environmentally sensitive would then turn around and propose to dump more ammonia and solid waste into our drinking water. BP's reputation as an environmental leader will be shattered if it dumps more toxic chemicals into the Great Lakes.
I urge BP to consider safer, more environmentally-sound alternatives as it expands its refinery capacity in the upper Midwest.
