Tell Lawmakers to Embrace Energy Efficiency for New York

Three important environmental initiatives that would improve New York's sustainability are waiting on lawmakers in Albany to act. The measures would amend the tax code to offer incentives for consumers to buy hybrid vehicles and building owners to use solar energy and install green roofs.

I'm writing to ask you to support three important environmental initiatives that will help us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality for New York's residents, commuters and visitors.

The first (S07023/A10210) exempts car-buyers from certain taxes when they purchase hybrid vehicles.  Motorists travel a total of 50 million miles a day throughout the five boroughs.  If more of those miles are driven in clean cars, we can significantly reduce the amount of noxious fumes emitted into the New York air.

The second (S08145/A11202) provides a tax credit for New York building owners who install solar power systems on their rooftops.  Powering our buildings with this clean energy source can greatly advance our efficiency goals.

The third (S07553/A11226) provides a green roof tax abatement.  In addition to promoting energy efficiency, green roofs will divert storm water from our overburdened sewer infrastructure, keeping raw sewage out of our rivers and other waterways.

As a New York resident committed to our city's sustainability, I support the Campaign for New York's Future's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent over the next two decades.  We can achieve that goal, while still supplying power reliably to a growing population, if we act swiftly on bold proposals like these.
