American Municipal Power (AMP) has proposed building a new dirty coal-fired power plant in Meigs County.
The plant would spew 7.3 million tons of carbon dioxide (the primary cause of global warming) and tens of thousands of tons of other pollutants into the air every year for the next 50 years. The $2.5 billion plant also would pose a large financial risk, as its estimated construction costs have doubled in the past two years, and future global warming legislation would likely require expensive retrofits.
Your city council voted last fall to approve the contract, but with the understanding that it has until March 1st to withdraw such approval.
Please contact and urge your council presidents and urge them to rescind the contract for AMP's dirty coal-fired power plant in favor of cleaner, more efficient energy alternatives. Phone numbers and emails for the relevant cities are listed below.
Please also use this link forward this message to family or friends who live in any of these communities and ask them to make a call, too: http://ga3.org/campaign/Meigs_coal_plant/forward
Please be sure to make the following three points to the city council people:
- Withdraw approval and rescind the contract for the American Municipal Power coal plant.
- AMP's proposal is a huge financial risk.
Your community would be responsible for a share of the plant's construction and operating costs. The estimated construction cost for the plant has doubled in the past two years to $2.5 billion, and operating costs are likely to skyrocket once federal global warming legislation is passed.
- Coal is a dirty source of power.
The plant would spew 7.3 million tons of carbon dioxide every year, require the mining of millions of tons of coal, and would not use the most advanced pollution control technologies available. We should instead be pursuing energy efficiency and cleaner renewable energy sources.
