In 2000, the F.C.C. created a great new program called low power radio that allows community groups and churches to get small FM radio stations to serve the local neighborhood. But big commercial broadcasters persuaded Congress to cut back on the program, limiting it to rural parts of the country. Now, we have a chance to pass new legislation to expand the service to its original size! We need as many member of Congress as possible to co-sponsor new legislation expanding low power radio.

Low power radio serves local communities by giving them a small radio station to serve a local neighborhood.
Americans throughout the country, not just in rural areas, deserve more low power radio.
This bill will give back the power to the Federal Communications Commission to implement the service as it was originally planned.
These radio stations empower underserved communities, offer service during emergencies, and offer local music and information not available anywhere else.
An independent technical study has demonstrated that big broadcasters were wrong to ask Congress to limit low power radio, Congress can authorize the F.C.C. to fully implement the service.

I am writing to ask your support of an exciting new radio service that is bringing vitality and community to our nation's airwaves.

In 2000, the F.C.C. created a great new program called low power radio that allows community groups and churches to get small FM radio stations to serve the local neighborhood.

But big, commercial broadcasters misled Congress and persuaded it to cut back on the program, limiting it to rural parts of the country.  At that time, Congress directed the F.C.C. to study the issue, and an independent technical review found that there were no problems with placing low power radio stations in all areas of the country.  Now Congress has the information it needs to fully implement low power radio. As a person of faith, it is important to me to see this bill pass.

Congressman Doyle (D-PA) and Congressman Terry (R-NE) have just introduced H.R. 2802, which will expand low power radio.  Please co-sponsor H.R. 2802.

The Senate Commerce Committee recently marked up the companion bill, S.1675, and passed it out of committee on unanimous consent.

Please co-sponsor the Local Community Radio Act of 2007.
