Write Your Local Newspaper to Say -- We Need to Protect ALL U.S. Waters Now!

Polluting industries are trying to undo long-established safeguards for our local waterways and wetlands. If they have their way, up to 60 percent of our nation's rivers and streams could be stripped of federal Clean Water Act protections.

The Clean Water Restoration Act would restore the original intent of the Clean Water Act, the law that has protected our communities from pollution and cleaned up our nation's water -- water that our kids can play in, water that supports healthy fish and wildlife populations, water that is free from dangerous toxins.

Sending a letter to the editor of your local paper is a great way to spread the word about this growing threat to our nation's waters. Just follow the steps below, and please let us know if you see it in print!

This is a chance for you to get personal -- let editors know why this issue is so important to you, and why others in your region should care. Here are some hints on how to make your letter compelling:

  • If possible, refer to something mentioned in the paper recently (include the date and title)
  • Keep it short, polite, and to the point (under 150 words is best)
  • Proofread your letter carefully
  • Don't be discouraged if your letter isn't published. Even unpublished letters can encourage a paper to pay more attention to the issue. Every effort counts!
