Right now, Congress is considering a proposal to end a moratorium on development of oil shale – a dangerous, new energy source which would threaten two million acres of America's public lands!

Some members of Congress want to rush us into developing oil shale despite the reality that it will put millions of acres of wildlife habitat at risk, threaten a significant portion of our country's water resources and dramatically increase global warming pollution.

I am writing to urge you to extend the funding limitation on final commercial oil shale leasing regulations for Fiscal Year 2009.

I strongly oppose the current rush to authorize commercial oil shale development on public lands. These lands provide crucial habitat for wildlife, healthy watersheds and streams, and unique opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Moreover, producing transportation fuels from oil shale and tar sands would dramatically increase global warming pollution. Even the best emerging technology for oil shale production would result in 20-45% more global warming pollution per gallon as compared to conventional gasoline. The United States cannot change course on its rising global warming pollution levels while dramatically increasing the carbon dioxide in our tanks.

America faces energy challenges, but oil shale does not provide any real solution, and can not be produced given the unacceptable costs to our country's land, water and wildlife. Please support a moratorium to prevent the Bureau of Land Management from issuing regulations to lease public lands for commercial oil shale development.

Whether it's oil shale or offshore drilling, Congress must stop chasing the last barrel of oil and start pursuing our clean energy future.

Please take the urgent and necessary steps that will give consumers better energy choices, cut gas costs, cut oil dependency and cut global warming pollution.
