Action Alert - Please Speak Up and Thank Senator Kerry

Dear Brit Tzedek Member,

Please join other Massachusetts members and supporters of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom in thanking Senator John Kerry for his recent forceful statements against any further Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank.

At the recent AIPAC Conference in Washington, DC, the Senator said:

"Israel, too, must take hard steps forward on the path to peace. And nothing will do more to show Israel’s commitment to making peace than freezing new settlement activity. We will defend Israel’s security unflinchingly— we always have, and we always will. But the fact is, settlements make it more difficult for Israel to protect its citizens. [...] They undercut President Abbas and strengthen Hamas by convincing everyday Palestinians that there is no reward for moderation. And they empower the enemies of peace throughout the region."

And in a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, during his recent trip to Washington, Sen. Kerry, in his description, "emphasized to the prime minister the importance of Israel moving forward, especially with respect to the settlements issue." Please thank Senator Kerry for taking leadership on this issue.

As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Kerry’s statements helped pave the way for President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton's equally unequivocal statements about settlement expansion.

Obama's message to Prime Minister Netanyahu was "Settlements have to be stopped in order for us to move forward."  And Clinton said in an interview with Al-Jazeera, "We want to see a stop to settlement construction -- additions, natural growth, any kind of settlement activity -- that is what the president has called for."

We can be proud that our senator "gets it" and that he is helping to move the peace process forward by showing the parties that the U.S. will be firm in its insistence that they adhere to previous agreements and avoid taking steps on the ground that will jeopardize the ongoing peace process. Please make sure that he hears words of support from his Jewish constituents.
