Grassroots Training & Organizing Institute July 26-27,
2009 What: Two days of grassroots organizing and activism training with leading community organizing and pro-Israel, pro-peace movement activists. Who: Chapter activists who want to improve their chapter's effectiveness, increase their own contribution to Brit Tzedek, network with other activists, or learn new organizing skills from the experts! Cost: $80/person (includes meals) Registration, Housing, Financial Assistance & More: chapter@btvshalom.org Presenters will include: Diane Balser, Executive Director of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, is a longtime political activist. She teaches Women's Studies at Boston University and recently wrote a chapter titled "Plotting the Middle Path to Israeli-Palestinian Peace: The Role of American Jews" for the 2008 book, Righteous Indignation: A Jewish Call for Justice. Aliza Becker, Deputy Director of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, has expertise in popular education, messaging and communications. She worked in immigration education and advocacy for 20 years and published six books on related topics prior to her work with Brit Tzedek. Mark Belkin is Chair of the Colorado Chapter of Brit Tzedek v' Shalom and Director of Field Services for the American Federation of Teachers, Colorado. He previously served as Director of Communications for the Iowa AFL-CIO and International Representative for the United Mineworkers of America. Jeremy Ben-Ami, Founder and Executive Director of J Street, previously served as Senior Vice President of Fenton Communications. He is the former director of communications and regional director for the New Israel Fund. He was policy director for Governor Howard Dean's 1996 presidential campaign and deputy manager of Mark Green's mayoral campaign for New York City. From 1992 through 1996, Ben-Ami worked for former President Bill Clinton, including two years as the President's Deputy Domestic Policy Advisor. Heather Booth is a veteran activist in the civil rights, women's rights, and antiwar movements. She was a co-founder and onetime President of the Midwest Academy, and currently serves as a board member of the Center for Community Change, Vice President of USAction, Director of the AFL-CIO's campaign for universal health care coverage, and as a consultant for Brit Tzedek v'Shalom. Cherie Brown, chair of the Brit Tzdek Chapter Development Committee, is the founder and Executive Director of the National Coalition building Institute (NCBI), a leadership training organization with chapters in 50 cities worldwide that focus on combating prejudice, resolving intergroup conflict and launching activist-based coalitions. Steve Masters, Brit Tzedek president, is a legislative attorney for the Philadelphia City Council. Mr. Masters has also served on the board of the Greater Philadelphia Jewish Community Relations Council, as well as the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area Jewish Labor Committee. Sue Swartz, Brit Tzedek Vice President and chair of Advocacy, has 30 years experience in community, labor union, and feminist organizing. Since 1995, she has taught community development, non-profit management, and diversity-related courses at Indiana University in Bloomington.
